Lazarus

Lazarus locked the hatch and leaned his forehead against it for a long second, letting the cool metal soothe him. Grace stepped close and wrapped her arms around him from behind, leaning her weight just enough to let him know she was there. Was holding him.

Was supporting him.

He couldn’t ask for much more in this life. Or any other.

Lazarus turned inside her arms and held her.

“For most of my life, I wanted to be a sailor,” he said quietly, reveling in her strength and warmth.

“And now?” she asked, staring at him from close enough to touch noses.

“I can see a time beyond that,” he offered, realizing that it was fast approaching. “When I don’t have to be in the Navy. When I can do things for myself.”

“And what things would you do?” Grace asked now.

“Well, I’ve dragged you around the galaxy for nearly two years now,” he smiled. “Maybe we could actually have a vacation that didn’t end up saving the galaxy or killing people.”

“That would be nice,” she smiled and leaned into him. “I have people to introduce you to. They’ll even like you.”

He chuckled, guessing what kind of folks they might be.

“What do we do after the war?” he asked.

“You will need to learn to relax,” Grace chuckled. “To sleep without waking.”

“Is it that bad?” he asked.

“Some nights,” she nodded. “Not as many now as before. I like to think that I calm you.”

“You do.” He squeezed her tighter against himself, grateful for this thing he could have never imagined. “And you will hopefully continue to, because we’re not done yet.”

“We’re not,” she agreed. “But you are for tonight.”

Turning, she dragged him by the hand in the direction of their sleeping chamber. He let her.

It was nice to be able to relax, even for a little while.

Tomorrow would hopefully begin the last phase in his grand war.
